When Nick Frasco decided to have his art show at the Keeney Memorial Center in Wethersfield, people told him that it was too big and that he should find a space more suitable for the small crowd he was going to attract. The space holds 300 comfortably and Frasco followers predicted he would have a tough time selling 100 tickets. Frasco remained optimistic and kept the space. Turns out, he should have found a bigger venue. Frasco had nearly 600 people filter in and out of his art show on April 30. Frasco unveiled a over 7-foot high,Landscape Oil Painting, 6-foot wide, 350-pound oil painting that took over a year to complete while his friend and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Hilton Valentine performed for the standing-room-only crowd. "The tickets ended up selling themselves," Frasco said. "There were even about 100 people who didn't get tickets who showed up at the show. I was blown away. It really turned out to be more of a happening then just an art show." Frasco had 30 pieces up for sale at the show, from large scale oil paintings to simple drawings. He sold around 10 pieces and raffled off a handful more to raise money for the Wethersfield Academy for Arts where he is the youth director. Frasco first met rocker Valentine when he was asked to design his album covers. Instead of asking for money,Ship Oil Painting, Frasco asked Valentine if he would perform at his art show. "Nick painted the cover for my new CD so I returned the favor by playing his art show,Famous Artist Supplies," Valentine said in an email. "It was a dream he's had for quite some time. He told me about the idea when he was still in art college. That was several years ago now. He was flying high on adrenaline Saturday night I can tell you that. It was like the top had blown off a pressure cooker. A very big release of emotion after finally making his dream come to fruition." A Frasco art show isn't your typical museum art show. Frasco got the crowd pumped up with a smoke-and-laser show and spent countless hours sewing together the outrageous costume he wore. He describes it as if "Elton John and Marilyn Manson's stylists got together." After he secured Valentine as a performer, Frasco booked other acts and even performed himself after his five-year son did a mime show. "I love performing so much," Frasco said. "I heard so much about the art and people bought stuff but I am going to try and focus on the performance part more for the next show. I am pitching a different art show where I minimize my part as the artist and have my work as one of six different artists and be the head performer and perform." Frasco was featured on Better Connecticut with Scott Haney and is working to put together a show to be featured at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Casino. Representatives who host wine tastings at the casino attended the show and showed interest. "The night was ridiculous. Not one person has come up to me saying it was good. They are attacking me and saying that they never saw anything like it."
