ZT: The DOs and DON’Ts of Spring Fashion Trends

From the most flattering color of the season to the one accessory that’ll glam up your wardrobe in five minutes flat, here are few cool new trends to try this spring—and a few that should be worn with caution.

1.Retro ruffles
There’s no better way to celebrate the arrival of spring—and with it, all those stellar outdoor cocktail hours—than with a flirty ruffle-trimmed sundress. However, DON’T waltz into work with a strappy number like this patterned halter from Oscar de la Renta: Anything that’s a DO for a summer barbecue is likely an office DON’T.

2.Pastels and ’90s neons
Spring runways were full of pale pinks, faded turquoise and a few bolts of acid brights. DO incorporate the season’s bold new colors into your wardrobe with one vivid item, like a rainbow-bright skirt or blazer such as those seen on Alexander Wang’s runway. Just wear one hot hue at a time, and DON’T try mixing a bunch of these trendy colors together—it can be blinding and not in a good way.

3.Biblike necklaces
You may think you DON’T need this trend, but you DO: One large candy-color necklace, like the ones seen on the Lanvin, Matthew Williamson and Louis Vuitton runways, will make any outfit seem super trendy. Seriously: One of these bad boys will make your trusty old T-shirt and jeans look like a million bucks.

4.Bohemian prints
Anna Sui, Diane von Furstenberg and other designers whipped up sweet boho-print dresses for spring. While the easy-breezy dresses are a total DO for date night, leave the arm bands, floral crowns and love beads at home: Too many ’60s accessories can make you look like you’re stuck in a time warp—which is a definite DON’T!

5.Roomy, relax-fit pants
Trendsetters will love the fresh new shape spring’s roomy harem-style pant gives them (plus, they’re a heck of a lot more comfy than those ankle-strangling skinny jeans!). If you’re feeling daring, DO try them with a slim-fitting tank and heels. DON’T wear a boxy top, sporty sneakers or piles of gold chains unless you’re into the MC Hammer look.

6.DO try oversize earrings
Wanna glam up a simple top or LBD? Slip on a pair of shoulder-grazing chandelier earrings, but DON’T pile on any other accessories: Big earrings + big necklace + big ring = big mess.

7.Mix-and-match patterns
DON’T be afraid to mix things up this season. As shown at the Michael Kors show, polka dots and stripes can be worn together. Just DO make sure the patterns are in the same color family.

8.Animal prints
Whether it’s an exotic, safari-feeling top or a leopard-print dress like this little number from Lanvin, animal prints are a total DO for spring. (Plus, we know that most of you—and your beaus—think animal prints are sexy!) However, saying “meow!” and giving the crazy-lady claw move while wearing one? Not like we have to tell you, but that’s a DON’T.

9.Cosmetic colors
When hitting the mall (or shopping online!) DO keep your eyes peeled for dresses and tops in pretty blush-color shades. Just like the peachy-pink powder you brush on your cheeks, clothes in this shade will light up and flatter your face. And believe it or not, there’s really no DON’T to watch out for with this trend—it almost always looks good!

These genius style tricks and super flattering suits will turn even the most swimsuit-wary gal into a certified sun goddess

If you want to slim the hips...

Don't go wild on bottom.
The less going on there, well-the less going on there!

Do bring focus up
with a top in a lighter color, or with fun details or a pretty pattern.

Do go for a fairly high-cut bottom
to create the illusion of longer, leaner legs.

If you want to boost a small bust ...

Don't rule out an underwire.
"It gives shape to small busts," says Suze Yalof Schwartz.

Do go for extras
like ruffles, beading and pleating. They add bulk and visual interest.

Don't do bandeau.
"They'll flatten you out even more," says Suze Yalof Schwartz.

If you want some belly control...

Don't go for shine.
It highlights every lump and bump. Matte is much better.

Do skip tankinis
unless you find one with an un-clingy top, like the striped style above.

Do show some skin.
A high-cut leg or low-cut top draws eyes away from your middle.

If you want to support a big bust...

Do nix triangle tops
if you're bigger than a D-cup-not enough support.

Don't do high necklines
unless you want a unibust. Didn't think so.

Do know that underwire or a hidden bra
is a must if your top's not a halter.

If you want to flatter your curves...

Don't run from stripes.
Just be sure they're vertical or angled across your body.

Don't say no to bikinis.
Just avoid thin string ties, which can dig and create bulges.

Do try a wrap style
if you have a thick middle - it's a waist whittler!
