Time Changes Value

With different experience they have been through, people assess the “right” and “wrong” in a variety of ways.
What was right for previous generations may prove wrong for present generation. For supporting examples we need only look no further than the Cultural Revolution in PRC. In 1966, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the most powerful authority in PRC, launched an ideology campaign against the revisionism and capitalism among paramount leaders. The original propose of this movement is to refresh the policy atmosphere inside the party but unfortunately, in 1969, it had become an uncontrolled chaos involved millions of innocent Chinese citizens. Until 1976, countless famous people who were regarded as lackeys of capitalism had been humiliated and abused during this policy catastrophe, including writers, artists, entrepreneurs and scientists, much of them had to suicide as an end of insulting. Understandably, neither the leader theory nor the citizens suspected the Cultural Revolution at that time because most people in 60’s China trusted the paramount’s decision without any hesitation. Certainly, people in that era would hardly recognize they had made a huge mistake in the country, but for the present generation, it is clarified that this disaster in PRC’s history should never be forgotten as a bloody lesson.
On the other hand, the” wrong” for previous generations may prove right for the present generation. We can still cite the PRC as another example. In occidental world, the Tian’an Square Protest in 1989 was much better known than that in China. The CCP had kept announcing that the movement was nothing but a rebellion until today. Nevertheless, with the Internet becoming popular, information is difficult to cover and the history eventually shows her real face in front of the public. So when talking about this campaign in 1989, present Chinese people primarily including most college students have acknowledged it as the first democracy protest against autocracy in PRC. After 1999, even the Chinese government began to admit their fault for the repression of the Tian’an Square Protest.
And last but not least, even though some traditional values may still apply today, they may need redefining in new terms. As we all know, heroes, like Napoleon and George Washington, are greatly needed in human history for their charisma, bravery and wisdom in leading people to victory. Despite their gorgeous attainment on surface, heroes are common people inside. Just as Napoleon was respected as the French savior when he united the France, he was banished to a barren island as a dictator. So if we talk about these heroes today, we should not decline their greatness but evaluate them in various aspects.
