Teresa Teng(1953-1995), one of the greatest singer in Chinese history, who had a sweet magnetic voice have fascinated me since the first time I heard her songs.It was in the 1980s when her songs were very popular among the common people but banned by the authorities as “reactionary ideology” in Mainland China.People loved her songs so much that they copied her albums in private.I can’t help thinking of her when I am watching her concert live DVD each time.

Teresa was a beauty with delicate facial features, looking like a pure, innocent young girl even in her 40’s.She succeeded in combining the slyle of traditional folk songs with that of western compositions, opening a new age in the Chinese pop music.For instance, one of her representative works called “He Ri Jun Zai Lai”(when will you come back again?) was once a folk song in the old Shanghai Ctiy in 1930s.But, after a modern music arrangement and by a new way of singing, it became a pop song having been sung by people until today.Besides, she knew how to express the right feelings while singing, so her songs could always touch the audiences and make them forget the outside world.

Teresa was more than a great singer; she has a benevolent heart.During her 42 years’ life, she held thousands of concerts at home and abroad, many of which were to raise money for the people in need. Once she said in a charitable concert, “I think holding a charity concert has the effect of killing two birds with one stone: I can try my best to sing each song well, while you can donate your money to those in trouble. I hope you can attend such galas more often!”

Teresa had not achieved her success for nothing. She was an example of hard work. To make a name in Japanese society, she worked even harder.She often stayed up late to learn Japanses.Her spirit had greatly inspired me to greater efforts in preparing for the College Entrance Examination and finally I got through that hard peroid.

Teresa is not only my idol. Her songs can be heard in streets and lanes in China and abroad where Chinese inhabit. To some extent, hers songs have become an indispensable element in Chinese culture. She is with me, with you, with every Chinese.
