Obama says China agrees on Iran nuclear programme transparency

  Tue Nov 17, 2009 12:12am EST

BEIJING, Nov 17 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama said on Tuesday China had agreed Iran must show its nuclear programme is peaceful and transparent. "We agreed that the Islamic Republic of Iran must provide assurance to the international community that its nuclear programme is peaceful and transparent," he said at news conference with China's President Hu Jintao in Beijing. "Iran has an opportunity to present and demonstrate its peacful intentions but if it fails to take advantage of this opportunity it will face consequences" Iran's disputed nuclear programme is among the thorny issues on the table during Obama's trip to China, which maintains strong energy and economic ties with Iran.
