同学们，早上好。

My fellow students, good morning!

六月高考，九月入学，千军万马，蔚为壮观。能有学上的，自然高高兴兴，能进入重点大学的，更是春风得意。然而，如果我问你们一声，上大学为什么？恐怕回答会是各种各样的：“没想过”；“大家考，我也考”，这样的回答肯定会有。“掌握专业本领，毕业为社会工作”，这应该算是相当理性的回答了，很自然，也很正常。但是我想告诉大家，专业技能并不是大学生的全部。一个大学的责任，是全面地提高大学生的品质。

You have experienced college entrance examination in June and enrolled in September. The flow of thousands of freshmen is a magnificent sight. It is happy for students to step in a university and is happier to enter a prestigious university. However, if I pose a question to you that why you are eager to attend a university, probably, I will get varied answers, of which may be “I never thought about it” and “I just follow the previous students.” An answer, which is more rational, is that I choose university because I could acquire professional qualities in universities and contribute to the society after graduation. But my point is that university lives are not just about getting professional skills. A university is obligated to foster all-rounded and high-quality students.

人的品质，由四方面来展现：道德的、健康的、文化的和专业的。

Four aspects reflect a person’s quality: morality, health, literateness and profession.

大学生，作为国家公民，应该培养自己遵守公民基本道德规范。其中最要紧的，我认为是诚信守法，尊重他人，关心社会。道德品质并非与生俱来，要靠接受教育，要靠理性的力量，更靠大学生本人的身体力行。古人云，勿以恶小而为之，勿以善小而不为。既然当大学生，就应该下决心用几年时间把自己锻炼成为一个道德高尚的人。

University students, as citizens, should strictly follow the moral norms, of which, I think, the most essential are integrity, respect for the law and other people and concern for society. Moral qualities are forged by education, rationality and, own exertions, rather than the bestowal by God. As a saying goes, never fail to do anything good which you deem as petty; never dare to do anything evil which you consider as trivial. Being a university student, it is our social responsibility to be moral and lofty.

现代意义的健康品质，已经不仅仅局限于身体，它还包括心理，更包括对社会环境的适应，能够与别人共同相处、和谐生活。在我们的生活中，有竞争就要分出成败，作选择就会有所得失。心理的不健康无非就是忧成败、患得失。既然当大学生，就应该树立正确的世界观、人生观，做到我们中国人说的仁者不忧，勇者不惧。

Healthy qualities, in modern context, are not limited to health conditions, but also embrace metal health, and the ability to adapt to the society and other people. In social life, competitions result in success or failure; different choices lead to gain and loss. And our worrying about success or failure, gain and loss are the symptoms of unhealthy psychology. So we university students must set up a correct world view and a profound life philosophy in order to become, as we Chinese say, "benevolent and unworried, bold and unafraid."

文化品质是指一个人接受继承人类文明成果的广度和深度。几千年来，人类科学的、技术的、哲学的、文学的、艺术的成就浩瀚如大海，在现在的这样的一个知识时代，最糟糕的、带有侮辱性的称谓，莫过于“没有文化”。既然当大学生，就应该如饥似渴汲取文化营养，充实自己的人生。

The quality of culture refers to the scale and scope of a person inheriting the fruits of human civilization. For thousands of years, the achievements in the fields of science, technology, philosophy, literature and art has accumulated enormously. So there is no more insulting words than labeling a person “uncultured” in this era of knowledge. That is to say, an undergraduate is ought to absorb cultural nutrition eagerly and to enrich our life.

专业品质常常是人们用以求职谋生的。农业时代，中国人说“荒年饿不死手艺人”，到工业时代，就有了“学会数理化，走遍天下都不怕”的说法，现在大家追求学历，选择专业，大多就是希望掌握专门的学问和技能。

As for the quality of professional skills, people always make full use of them to make a living. In agricultural era, it used to be said by Chinese that a man with particular skills would survive even in famines. Proceeding to industrial era, people has been saying that someone who has mastered math, physics and chemistry will become bold and unafraid. Consequently, most people pursuing academic diplomas and picking majoring are keen to grasp specific knowledge and skills.
