The NYPD's ring of security in lower Manhattan is the most advanced surveillance system in the nation.

On Wednesday for the first time CBS 2 HD takes you inside its incredible command center.

License-plate readers, face-recognition systems, radiation detectors … what we saw was the command center of what the NYPD calls its Lower Manhattan Security Initiative. Information pours in to these analysts from more than 1,000 cameras, allowing police to monitor almost everything that goes on below 30th Street from river to river.

What Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg want to do is extend this system to 60th Street. After Saturdays terror scare in Times Square, they said that expansion is vital. Inspector Salvatore DiPace of the NYPD's Counterterrorism Bureau, is the man in charge here.

We walked past the ",wholesale boots;big board" and DiPace explained, "This is our operational "dashboard" where we work incidents and alerts. These are live shots, live view cameras from across Midtown and downtown New York City."

Actually, the Midtown part of what goes on in this command center needs reinforcement. They only have a few camera scattered around the area between 30th Street and Times Square, the spot where Saturday's terror care took place. What they need they said is simple: more money for more cameras.

Video analytics?

CBS 2 HD: "But that's not necessarily Hollywood? You can read license plates."

DiPace: "Absolutely. The system is built to alert to license plate detection. Various plates are in our database that may be of interest to us here."

We watched from big screen to people manning consoles and back, basically saying, hi-tech, yes; but these people still do the work. Keep that in mind the next time you walk the streets of Manhattan and feel safe.

The hi-tech system can even initiate roadblocks, or start an evacuation.
