With one month of the season left before the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, take a look at the cold, snowy days of the last couple months.

A total lunar eclipse occurs as the full moon is shadowed by the Earth on the arrival of the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, on December 21, 2010 in Truckee, California. The lunar eclipse had not coincided with the Winter Solstice since 1638.

Improved wetsuit materials and technology meant that surfing had become a year-round sport for places like Cornwall, with many dedicated surfers able to take advantage of the better waves and less crowded breaks the winter offers. Although most people assume surfing in the UK began in the 1960s, it was in fact already starting to become a popular summer activity on British beaches by the end of the First World War. Surfing, which is one of the fastest growing sports in Britain, is now a multi-million pound industry and employs 1000s of people in the UK alone.
