苏外第二届赴英修学之Farmor's School系列报道(十九):
Unique Experience --- Chinese Happy Campers
At the end of every summer term all the year 7 students would be organized for a camping trip. This time we 13 Chinese visitors were lucky to join them. However, none of us had got any idea about camping. Luckily, all the home stay parents prepared everything needed: tents that can be opened up like umbrellas, mattresses that can be blown up like balloons and sleeping bags that make blankets unnecessary and so on. During the 3 days' camping we tried many outdoor activities which were quite different and interesting. Now let's have a look at the students' feelings.
Day 1: Intelligent + Scary
Today was a nice day, because we would go and have a camping trip for three days. After 2 hours we arrived at the camping site: Slimbridge. We had to set up the tent first.
It was vey hard for us. We did it for a long time. And we turned to our teachers but they said that we should do by ourselves. So we tried again and at last we did it! We managed by ourselves!

After lunch we had a game with the English students. It was so funny. We were divided into 12 groups. Then we had to use small cups with holes to collect water from the buckets on top of the hillside. And the group with the most water would win.
"Ding```", we ran very fast. And we were very cooperative. At first we were faster than the other groups. But later Leon dropped the cup and failed to pass it to the next person. So we slowed down a bit. At last we didn't win but we all had a grand time.

What is a shelter? It is something that protects people from rain, wind, danger, etc. And now we are going to make a shelter by ourselves!
At first we needed to find a proper tree. We found one with many trunks. And then we began to look for some long and stout branches. They were really heavy. "So, now we should put the long branches first. And this is the outside layer. Then we put the short ones on the long ones to make the shelter firm. At last we can decorate it with flowers and leaves." The teacher said.
And everybody joined the work. We built a really nice shelter soon. Girls made a wreath for it. We put it on the top of the door. Boys found 2 pieces of wood to make the chair and table. They were small but very nice. The small shelter was very sweet!
We were very happy and took photos sitting in it. It was such a rosy experience!

At 10:30 p.m. we had the night walk in the woods. Firstly we sat on the field and listened to a story. It was a very scary one: In 1920s there lived a carpenter named Sydney Wallace. And after he died he was buried just near our camping site. Since then on, there was always a scary sound among the woods calling, "Sydney, Sydney```". Girls were very afraid of the story. And we boys were very excited. We stood between trees. When girls were coming we jumped out and they were scared to scream. After walking we all laughed.
It was vey cold at night. When we got back from the long walk we had hot chocolate which was very delicious. I drank a lot and looked up to the sky. I saw lots of stars. What a nice evening!

Day 2: Cooperative + Creative
This was the second day. It was freezing in the early morning. Someone got up at 4 o'clock and made a lot of noise. So we all woke up. I slept for only 4 hours. So tired!
We had 4 great challenges today. We got papers with 8 questions on it and a map. First we needed to finish all the 8 questions to get 8 numbers on the map. Each number stood for an exact place in the woods. After we finished all the questions we went to check. All correct! So we could go into the woods now. We ran and ran. We had to find all the 8 places on the map. And we could get letters. 13 stood for E. 25 was for O. At last we got 8 letters: E, O, T, P, A, D, L, S. Teachers said that we had to think up an animal word using the letters. Finally we got the word "tadpoles". How clever we were! Although we didn't win the teacher gave everyone candies. What a kind teacher!
Only in three days we will go back to China. I will miss my English friends very much.

The second task for us was to build a raft. We had got 4 large buckets, 2 pieces of wood blocks and many ropes. We felt that 4 buckets were too big for a raft. So we decided to make two rafts in two groups.
We all felt vey excited and interested. This was the first time for us to make a raft. We had a lot of ideas. David was very clever and had got the best one. So he became the chief designer. We tried to put the board tied to the buckets tightly. And we cooperated vey well. At last we finished! It was so great. And another group also made a very good one.
Then it was the test time. We carried raft No.1 into the pond and George got on. But it seemed very hard for him to control the raft. Later on he was stuck at a corner of the pond. Just then two girls jumped into the pond and swam to George. He was rescued! We all began to laugh. But it was really challenging for him because it was too windy. Oh, poor George!

After the raft building we went to try another project-making a flag. We got a long stick, some cloths and lots of little decorations.
At first we discussed what we were going to draw on the flag. And we all agreed to draw a panda. Then everyone was given work to do. Some students were going to draw the panda; some had to draw some bamboo leaves; I needed to decorate the stick with 2 partners. We used the beautiful ribbons, colorful furry balls and many stickers to make it more beautiful. At last we wrote our names beside the lovely panda.
We put our flag in the middle of the hillside. It was waving there, beautifully and freely.

We also did some pottery. We made a lovely panda. It was fat with a big Chinese character "福" in the middle of his belly. Very cute design!
Day 3: Tired + Gratified
Today was the last day for camping. After we packed everything up we went to the woods to have a walk.
After we walked for a few minutes we saw a group of people were roasting the marshmallow. We felt very interested and curious. So we joined them to have a go by ourselves.
First we needed to find a wooden stick and make it sharp in one way, because we needed to insert the marshmallow into the stick. Then the teacher gave me a marshmallow and I inserted it into my stick. I began to roast it on fire. Very soon it turned to be a little black. I blew it and tasted. Wow, it was very sweet and soft. I really liked it.
I like camping very much and I feel reluctant to go back. What about you?
--- Gao Ziwei
Wonderful time was always short but the experience would never been forgotten. We would never forget the scary night walk, the gorgeous countryside scenery, and the splendid rafts we built. Let's cherish all the sweet experiences in our mind, forever!
